Some heavy showers this afternoon but we’re in our wet-weather walking gear. We drive a few miles to Aviemore and then to Loch an Eilein. We’re still in search of the Crested Tit but after an afternoon walking around the Loch and its smaller sister (Loch Gamhna) we find nothing. Plenty of Coal Tits, Chaffinch etc. so we leave at around 5pm with still the Crested Tit to track down, although it looks like time is up and we’ll have to find this critter (exclusive to the ancient pine forests of Scotland) next time. Another good weather day today. We drive a short distance to Loch Morlich, a large expanse of water and home to some water-sports and camping. We park up and walk the perimeter of the loch (about 4 miles) which takes us about 3 hours (lots of stops, birding etc.). Continue reading »

The first of three ospreys has hatched in the nest in Loch Garten, it hatched yesterday at 22:10. It made the national news on BBC Radio Scotland. You can watch the nest using the RSPB live webcam feed.  We were there in the morning and might visit the reserve (just a mile or two away from the cottage) one the way out or way back today…

There was rain the following morning (20th) but this turned to snow on the mountains.
